The phrase, immortal soul, nowhere appears in the Bible. In this page we will look at what the Bible says about immortality.
The Bible says we should seek immortality. “To those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life.” (Romans 2:7) We do not seek for something we already have, thus we do not have immortality now.
2 Timothy 1:10 says Jesus brought immortality to light through the gospel. This shows how we must seek immortality. It also shows those without the gospel don’t have immortality.
We must put on immortality as we do not have it now. “For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’” (I Corinthians 15:53-54)
The only verse in the Bible where the word immortal appears is I Timothy 1:17 which says God is immortal. Indeed, only God is immortal. I Tim 6:15-16 says God, “alone possesses immortality.”
These are the only places in the Bible where the words immortal and immortality are seen. Thus we do not have immortal souls as immortality must be sought through the gospel. We must put on immortality, and only God is immortal by nature.
The lie of the serpent is “you surely shall not die” Genesis 3:4. Not only was it believed by Eve but most people believe it too in believing an immortal soul goes to heaven or hell or believing in reincarnation.
The words “immortal soul” never appear together in the Bible. In fact, Ezekiel 18:4 says “the soul who sins will die.” The Bible does not say the soul is immortal.
The most well known verse in the Bible says eternal life is a gift to those who believe. “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” John3:16. The verse does not say they should not go to hell but rather go to heaven. Those who do not believe perish!
Immortality is something to put on as we do not have it naturally. “For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality” 1Corinthians 15:53.
Indeed, immortality is a gift and not a right. “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ Our Lord” Romans 6:23.
Most people prefer to believe the lie of the serpent, and ignore the fact that souls die. Those who do not believe perish, while immortality is a gift.
