Overcoming Sin

The first step in overcoming sin is knowing its source. Sin comes from human nature and not from a fallen angel.

James 1v14-15 states this clearly, “ But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived it gives birth to sin, and when sin is accomplished it brings forth death.” Mark 7: 20-23 agrees with this saying,” That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting, and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and decile the man.”

You might object, saying when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness the devil tempted him, but the devil here was the promptings of his own mind. Hebrews 4:15 says that Jesus was tempted just as we are tempted. When we are tempted, the devil with horns and a pitchfork is not standing there urging us to sin. A close look Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness reveals that Jesus was not tempted that way either. “Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory…..” Because the earth is round it would have been impossible for the devil to physically do this. Thus it must have been a temptation within Christ’s mind.

Temptation comes from within. We have nobody to blame but ourselves for our sins.
